About the Cover

In terms of popularity, the guppy has little to no competition in the freshwater hobby. Small, easy to keep, and coming in a range of patterns and a kaleidoscope of colors, there is an ideal guppy out there for almost any hobbyist. Our annual livebearers issue is exalted this year by a pair of red tuxedo guppies captured in a stunning formation that flawlessly conveys the potential of these timeless fish. For some of the latest insight on livebearing fish, check out Zach Culumber's article exploring swordtail diversity (p. 64) and Charles Clapsaddle's advice on raising and showing quality fish (p. 34). Tip of the Month:

That mudskippers, those amphibious gobies that scurry around on the shore and climb mangrove roots to get insects, cannot breathe air? They carry water in a pouch around their gills, keeping those organs wet, so they can continue to extract oxygen---sort of "wet-dry gills"!
