What’s in a name? In the case of this Aphyosemion bitaeniatum from Lagos, Nigeria, it could be an awful lot. This fish is considered by some to be the same species as Aphyosemion bivittatum, while others consider them separate species, and many think there is a complex of several closely related species. However, by breeding together only fish from a single population, killie aquarists avoid taxonomic nightmares while preserving a genetic diversity as close to natural as possible.
