MAR APR 2017

Chin up! The young silver arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) on this issue’s cover seems to have just snapped up a morsel from the sandy bottom of its tank before posing for this glamor shot. The large-growing silver arowana eats fish, crustaceans, and even the occasional bird snatched from above the waterline in its native South American waters, though most specimens can be weaned onto a much healthier diet of prepared foods in the aquarium. Even then, tankmates should be chosen with care, as it is in this stately predator’s nature to hunt. Read more in “Freshwater Oddballs from Around the World” (p. 50).
