Fending Against the Crown of Thorns Starfish

by Tsing Mui on October 8, 2012 at 12:11 pm

A team of Australian scientists has discovered that a harmless protein mixture, originally used to grow bacteria, can be very effective in destroying the crown of thorns starfish, which ravages coral reefs across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This discovery comes right on time, as there are signs that the starfish are building up for another huge attack in the regions. There are still tests required to confirm that the mixture is safe for other sea life, but it could yield a dramatic improvement in the control of the crown of thorns.
