One family at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in California was watching a stationary octopus when they got a huge surprise: The octopus started walking on land to go after a meal!
Of course, for the family this was a fun and entertaining event, and since they stayed clear of the octopus, it was able to easily and safely return to its watery home. In an aquarium, however, an octopus that leaves its home may never be able to get back to it. Octopuses can make great aquarium residents, but remember that they are master escape artists. According to James Fatherree’s article Octopuses: Things to Know Before You Buy, they can escape from a hole the size of their eyeball, so make sure the tank is tightly covered, with even the smallest gaps being sealed up. Be sure to check out his article for other great tips on the aquarium care of octopuses.
